PAPUA - Amidst Papua’s breathtaking yet challenging terrain, the Indonesian National Army (TNI) stands at the forefront, driving the acceleration of welfare development. Upholding the mandate of Presidential Instruction (Inpres) Number 9 of 2020, the TNI is not merely a guardian of security but also a facilitator of development and a vital communication bridge between the government and the people, Tuesday (11/03/2025).
Inpres 9/2020 provides the legal foundation for the TNI to carry out three primary missions in Papua: ensuring security, assisting local governments in delivering essential services, and fostering inclusive social engagement. These objectives are realized through the deployment of task forces (Satgas) across Papua, proactively contributing to regional stability and development.
Security is the cornerstone of progress in Papua. The TNI recognizes this and tirelessly works to establish a safe and conducive environment for all. However, security threats remain, particularly from the Armed Separatist Group (KSB), formerly known as the Free Papua Movement (OPM), which continues to pose a serious challenge.
One stark example of this threat was the tragic murder of Glen Malcolm Conning, a New Zealand citizen and helicopter pilot for PT Intan Angkasa Air Service, on Monday (5/8/2024). Acts of violence committed by separatist groups not only disrupt regional stability but also endanger foreign nationals contributing to Papua’s development.
Demonstrating its unwavering commitment to humanitarian efforts, the TNI swiftly evacuated the bodies of Pilot Glen, health workers, teachers, and toddlers on Tuesday (6/8/2024). This operation was conducted without prior requests from the victims’ families or the New Zealand Government—purely as an act of humanity.
Additionally, the successful rescue of Susi Air Pilot, Captain Phillip Mark Mehrtens, on (21/9/2024) stands as a testament to the TNI’s expertise and dedication. This remarkable achievement underscores the TNI’s firm resolve to safeguard both Indonesian and foreign citizens from harm.
Habema Commander Major General Lucky Avianto emphasized, “Security is a fundamental pillar in achieving prosperity for the people of Papua. The TNI and Polri are fully aware of this responsibility and continue to maintain security stability across the region. Beyond taking decisive action against separatist groups, the TNI also engages in community outreach through social and humanitarian programs. By fostering strong relationships with the local population, we aim to build a solid synergy in preserving security and accelerating development in Papua.”
With professionalism and an unwavering spirit of service, the TNI remains committed to being both a protector of the people and a catalyst for positive change in Papua.
