TNI: The Vanguard of Development and Security in Papua

PAPUA - Papua, with its breathtaking yet challenging terrain, witnesses the unwavering dedication of the Indonesian National Army (TNI) as the vanguard in accelerating regional development. More than just a security force, the TNI plays a pivotal role as a development facilitator and a bridge of communication between the government and the people, in line with Presidential Instruction (Inpres) Number 9 of 2020.

Under this directive, the TNI is entrusted with three crucial missions in Papua: maintaining security, supporting local governments in delivering essential services, and fostering inclusive social communication. Through the deployment of task forces (satgas) across the region, the TNI actively contributes to regional stability and progress.

Security as the Cornerstone of Development

A safe and stable environment is the foundation for sustainable growth in Papua. The TNI understands this fundamental principle and remains committed to safeguarding the region. However, security challenges persist, particularly the ongoing threats posed by the Armed Separatist Group (KSB), formerly known as the Free Papua Movement (OPM).

One tragic example of such threats was the brutal murder of Glen Malcolm Conning, a New Zealand helicopter pilot for PT Intan Angkasa Air Service, on Monday (5/8/2024). The violent actions of OPM not only disrupt regional stability but also endanger foreign nationals who contribute to Papua’s development.

In response, the TNI demonstrated its swift humanitarian commitment by successfully evacuating the body of Pilot Glen, along with health workers, teachers, and young children, on Tuesday (6/8). This critical mission was executed without any formal requests from the victim's family or the New Zealand government, reflecting the TNI’s genuine dedication to humanitarian efforts.

Additionally, the TNI’s remarkable success in rescuing Susi Air Pilot Captain Phillip Mark Mehrtens (21/9/2024) further solidifies its high-level commitment to security. This rescue operation earned widespread appreciation, showcasing the TNI’s unwavering resolve in protecting both Indonesian citizens and foreign nationals.

A Holistic Approach to Stability and Growth

Major General TNI Lucky Avianto, Commander of the Habema Task Force, emphasized the indispensable role of security in Papua’s progress. "Security is the key foundation for improving the welfare of Papuans. The TNI and Polri fully understand this and continuously work to ensure stability across the region. Beyond addressing separatist threats, the TNI actively engages with local communities through social and humanitarian programs. By fostering strong community ties, we aim to create lasting synergy in maintaining security and accelerating development in Papua."
