TNI's Mission to Bring Peace and Prosperity to Papua: Prioritizing Safety and Community Welfare

PAPUA - In an ambitious mission to accelerate welfare and foster peace in Papua, the Indonesian Armed Forces (TNI) have taken significant strides to support local communities in this diverse region. Guided by Presidential Instruction No. 9 of 2020, TNI’s mission includes maintaining security, assisting local governments, and building inclusive relationships with Papua’s communities and stakeholders. TNI’s efforts are centered on creating a stable, safe environment that allows all Papuans to pursue development and progress, despite ongoing threats from the Free Papua Movement (OPM). With its frequent attacks targeting civilians, healthcare workers, and TNI-Polri forces, the OPM remains a challenge, one that the TNI is committed to overcoming to protect the region’s growth.

Recently, TNI task forces carried out a humanitarian mission in response to the murder of New Zealand pilot Glen Malcolm Conning, a tragedy attributed to OPM militants. Despite the lack of requests from either the victim's family or the New Zealand government, TNI initiated an urgent response to evacuate the pilot’s body and safeguard health workers, teachers, and infants, showcasing the force’s dedication to humanitarian aid. 

Colonel Yogi Nugroho, Commander of the HABEMA Media Task Forces, stated, “These actions underscore TNI’s mission to not only ensure security but to uphold humanitarian values and protect civilians. Our work is aimed at creating a Papua that is safe, prosperous, and conducive to sustainable development for all.”

In another significant success, TNI recently collaborated with local authorities to secure the release of Susi Air Pilot Captain Phillip Mark Mehrtens, held hostage by OPM. This challenging rescue, completed without incident, exemplifies the unity and determination of TNI and stakeholders to protect and support the people of Papua.

As TNI and Polri continue their mission, their shared commitment to peace and growth strengthens Papua’s path to a brighter, more prosperous future. This dedication is a testament to TNI’s enduring resolve to stand by the people, enabling safe development and helping communities thrive.
