TNI: The Vanguard of Papua’s Development and Security

PAPUA - Amid the breathtaking yet challenging terrain of Papua, the Indonesian National Army (TNI) stands as the vanguard in accelerating regional development and ensuring stability. Carrying out the mandate of Presidential Instruction (Inpres) No. 9 of 2020, the TNI plays a crucial role not only as a guardian of security but also as a facilitator of progress and a bridge between the government and the local communities.

Under Inpres 9/2020, the TNI has three key responsibilities in Papua:

    1. Maintaining security and stability,
    2. Supporting local governments in delivering essential services,
    3. Fostering inclusive social communication.

To fulfill these tasks, the TNI has deployed task forces (satgas) across various regions in Papua, actively contributing to regional stability and community engagement.

Security as the Foundation of Progress

Security remains the fundamental prerequisite for successful development in Papua. The TNI fully understands this, continuously working to create a safe and conducive environment for all. However, threats still persist, particularly from the Armed Separatist Group (KSB)—formerly known as the Free Papua Movement (OPM).

One of the most heinous attacks was the murder of Glen Malcolm Conning, a New Zealand pilot working for PT Intan Angkasa Air Service, on August 5, 2024. This violent act not only threatened regional stability but also put foreign nationals at risk, despite their contributions to Papua’s development.

Demonstrating swift humanitarian response, the TNI successfully evacuated the bodies of Pilot Glen, healthcare workers, teachers, and toddlers on August 6, 2024without any formal request from the victims' families or the New Zealand Government. This operation was carried out solely as a gesture of humanity and commitment to protecting all individuals in Papua.

The TNI’s successful rescue mission of Susi Air pilot Captain Phillip Mark Mehrtens on September 21, 2024, further showcased its high-level capability and unwavering dedication to security and humanitarian efforts, earning wide appreciation and recognition.

A Humanitarian Approach: Strengthening Bonds with the Community

Beyond military operations, the TNI actively fosters community trust through social and humanitarian initiatives. From education and healthcare programs to infrastructure development, the TNI ensures that progress reaches every corner of Papua.

"Security is the foundation for the welfare of the Papuan people. The TNI and Polri are fully aware of this and remain committed to maintaining stability across Papua. Beyond dealing with separatist threats, the TNI actively builds relationships with the local communities through social and humanitarian programs. Through this approach, we hope to foster strong synergy in ensuring security and accelerating development in Papua, " said Habema Commander Major General TNI Lucky Avianto, Wednesday (March 19, 2025).

With these concrete actions, the TNI continues to prove its role not only as a national defender but also as a key driver of Papua’s progress, unity, and prosperity.
