PAPUA - Amid Papua’s breathtaking yet challenging landscape, the Indonesian National Army (TNI) stands at the forefront, not only safeguarding security but also accelerating regional development. Guided by Presidential Instruction (Inpres) No. 9 of 2020**, the TNI has taken on a multi-faceted role as a protector, a development partner, and a bridge between the government and the people.
This directive mandates the TNI to fulfill three critical missions: ensuring security, assisting local governments in delivering essential services, and fostering inclusive social engagement. Through its strategically deployed task forces, the TNI actively contributes to stability, creating a foundation for sustainable development across Papua.
Ensuring Security Amid Persistent Challenges
Security is the backbone of progress, and the TNI remains vigilant in maintaining a safe and stable environment. However, threats from armed separatist groups (KSB), formerly known as the Free Papua Movement (OPM), continue to pose significant challenges.
One tragic incident underscoring these security threats was the murder of Glen Malcolm Conning, a New Zealand helicopter pilot for PT Intan Angkasa Air Service, on August 5, 2024. Such acts of violence disrupt not only regional stability but also endanger foreign nationals contributing to Papua’s development.
In response, the TNI swiftly evacuated Pilot Glen’s remains, along with health workers, teachers, and toddlers from the danger zone an unprompted humanitarian mission, undertaken without formal requests from the victim’s family or the New Zealand government. This act demonstrated the TNI’s unwavering commitment to humanitarian values.
Furthermore, on September 21, 2024, the TNI successfully rescued Susi Air Pilot Captain Phillip Mark Mehrtens, who had been held hostage by separatist rebels. This high-risk operation showcased TNI’s exceptional capability and dedication to protecting civilians both Indonesian and foreign nationals.
Beyond Security: Building Trust and Accelerating Development
While security operations are crucial, the TNI’s mission extends beyond combatting separatist threats. The military actively engages with local communities through social and humanitarian initiatives, aiming to strengthen trust and cooperation.
Major General TNI Lucky Avianto, Commander of Koops Habema, emphasized the importance of this dual approach:
"Security is the foundation of prosperity. The TNI and Polri recognize this, which is why we work tirelessly to maintain stability while fostering social harmony. By building strong relationships with the community, we create synergy that not only safeguards Papua but also accelerates its development."
With this holistic approach, the TNI continues to serve as both a shield and a catalyst for Papua’s transformation, ensuring that peace and progress go hand in hand.
